As Mental Health America of Ohio, we continue to strengthen our presence at the Ohio Statehouse, actively speaking out on vital mental health care policies and informing policy decision makers. Our Board level Public Policy Committee, which includes representatives of other Ohio Mental Health America affiliates, establishes an annual mental health public policy action agenda for MHAOhio to execute.

MHAOhio advocates for individuals and their families who live with mental health issues. Our Get Connected Program helps them navigate the mental health and addictions system. We’re looking for people with lived experience with mental illness to help us by speaking out about their needs, and we’re looking for volunteers to help us advocate on behalf of those who may not have a voice. MHAOhio is dedicated to ending the stigma and discrimination against those living with mental health issues through our advocacy efforts.

We help individuals seeking help:

  • sort through the maze of mental health services, both public and private
  • connect with state and local advocacy organizations including Disability Rights Ohio and Legal Aid Society of Columbus
  • connect with a Client Rights Advocate at the state or local level if they wish to file a complaint or grievance
  • communicate with their mental health providers to help clarify any information necessary for optimal treatment
  • obtain in-depth information and educational materials about client rights, state laws addressing psychiatric care and hospitalization, and other general mental health resources

We help family members seeking help:

  • understand confidentiality and its limits
  • learn how to get emergency services in a crisis
  • problem solve when a family member is refusing help
  • connect with support groups and educational programs
  • connect with other community resources
  • obtain in-depth information and educational materials about client rights, state laws addressing psychiatric care and hospitalization, and other general mental health resources
